An Garda Síochána have detected hundreds of speeding incidents, as part of its Bank Holiday Roads Enforcement Operation with the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

On Saturday, March 30 there were 483 incidents of speeding detected by safety cameras, and on Sunday, March 31 there were 137 detected, according to the most up to date figures from An Garda Síochána.

Since the start of the operation on Thursday, March 28 at 7:00a.m, there has been a total of 140 incidents involving drivers suspected of being under the influence of an intoxicant.

There has also been three fatal road incidents in counties: Tipperary; Mayo and Kildare.

The enforcement operation will continue until tomorrow (Tuesday, April 2) at 7:00a.m.

Speeding

The enforcement campaign is focused on intoxicated driving, speeding, mobile phone use and distracted driving, among other offences.

Some of the identified incidents of speeding reported so far this weekend include a driver in Co. Leitrim who was travelling at 91km/h in a 50km/h zone.

Upon testing, the motorist was found positive for cocaine and subsequently arrested for driving under the influence.

Another car was seized and the driver was fined in Santry, Co. Dublin, where a learning driver was travelling alone at 107km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Another driver was stopped in the area of Barnesmore Gap, Co. Donegal where the car was seized and the driver was arrested, after testing positive for cocaine use.

The driver also could not provide any proof of having a driving licence or insurance.

Road safety

To date in 2024, there have been 58 fatalities on Irish roads in road traffic collisions, an increase of 16 on last year’s figures.

In 2023, 35% of all drivers detected under the influence of intoxicants were for drug driving.

While operating a checkpoint in Co. Dublin, Sergeant Gavin Coleman said:

“Please stick to the speed limit. Do not drink or use drugs if you’re going to drive, and don’t get distracted by anything, including your mobile phone.”
