A Garda Síochána Road Policing Unit seized a tractor at a checkpoint established as part of Operation Fanacht in Co. Meath recently.

The tractor in question was seized for two reasons: First off, its tyres were “excessively worn”, Gardaí say. In addition, it was noted that the machine had not been taxed in 2,408 days.

The tractor was subsequently seized by Gardaí and a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN) was issued.

In a brief post on the matter, An Garda Síochána said:

Meath Roads Policing Unit were conducting a checkpoint as part of Operation Fanacht when they stopped this tractor – it was found that it was untaxed for 2,408 days and that the tyres were excessively worn.

“The vehicle was seized. Fixed Charge Penalty Notice issued,” the statement concluded.

According to VRT Ireland, motor tax for agricultural tractors amounts to €102 annually.

Meanwhile, according to the Road Safety Authority (RSA), by law, it is a driver’s responsibility to make sure that their vehicle meets legal requirements and is in a roadworthy condition at all times.

“If you drive with damaged or worn tyres, you are putting your own life and the life of others at risk. You also risk prosecution,” the RSA says.
