Farmers and the wider public are being invited to attend an information meeting on roadside tree felling in Galway tonight (Wednesday, November 4).
The meeting, taking place at 8:00p.m in the Loughrea Hotel, will discuss safety concerns and the responsibilities involved in managing roadside trees.
The Galway Irish Farmer's Association (IFA) county executive said it is organising the meeting in response to growing concerns among farmers about the dangers posed by older, mature roadside trees.
It said these concerns have been heightened ahead of the upcoming storm season and the ongoing impact of ash dieback.
According to the IFA, farmers have highlighted the risks associated with trees along public roads and the difficulties they have encountered in obtaining clear information on the procedures, responsibilities and requirements involved in roadside tree felling.
Galway IFA has invited representatives from Galway County Council, ESB, An Garda Síochána, FBD Insurance and EIR to attend the meeting in a bid to address these concerns.
Each organisation will outline its role and provide information and guidance from its own area of responsibility.
As the winter storm season approaches, Galway IFA chair Micheal Haverty said it is important that farmers have access to clear, practical information to help them address these issues safely and responsibly.
He said the meeting will provide an opportunity for farmers to gain a better understanding of the process involved in roadside tree felling, the potential dangers associated with unsafe trees, and the importance of taking appropriate action to protect road users, farm families and the wider public.
"All are welcome to attend. Galway IFA encourages farmers and anyone concerned about roadside trees, tree safety and the procedures surrounding tree felling to come along and take part in what promises to be an informative and important meeting," he added.
