Cattle prices remain strong in the countries marts, with reports that exporters and farmers are standing side by side for lots.

Headford Mart reported an improved trade on Saturday last with 400 lots on offer.

Mart Manager Joe Wynne said that heavy cattle over 700kg were making €900-1,200 over.

He added that weaning bulls were making €2.20-2.80/kg while the hammer fell for heifers at €2.40-3.00/kg

Heavy cull cows were also in exceptional demand with lots making €500-1,000 over.

There were a limited number of cows and calves on offer and they went from €1,500-2,000.

Carnew mart reported a strong trade on Saturday – the Wicklow venue had 1,000 cattle on offer. Exporters were seen to great effect around the ring, according to the Mart Manager.

David Quinn said there was strong demand for all lots, particularly for export type weanling bulls and heifers.

Weanling bulls sold from €2.50/kg with the top lot making €1,100 over while heifers sold for €2.50-3.83/kg, he said.

Beef and forward steers made €750-1,250 over, he said, while beef heifers met with a good demand with lots selling for €2.00-2.92/kg.

There was also strong demand for cows with calves at foot with lots selling from €1,200 to a tops of €2,300.

Roscommon mart also reported a positive trade. Mart Manager Maura Quigley said dry cows were making €925-1700/head.

There was also strong demand for forward and finished cattle in the midlands venue, she said.

The strong demand for finished heifers was reflected in the price with the hammer falling at €420-930 over or €1.70-2.55/kg.

Steers met with a similar trade, she said, while there was strong demand for forward and finished lots.

The pick of the steers was a Charolais weighing 750kg selling for €1,830. Other lots went for €1.70-2.44/kg.

Carrick-on-Suir also reported a strong trade on Friday last, the mart reported.

Angus type weanling heifers sold for €1.98-2.07/kg. Their continental counterparts sold for €2.26-2.71/kg.

Weanling bulls sold from €1.89-2.00/kg for plainer type lots while continental weanling bulls sold for €2.23-2.93/kg.

There was also a smaller number of finished cattle on offer and they generally made from €2.24-2.33/kg.
