Just over €7,000 has been raised to cover the funeral costs of a young man killed at a meat processing factory in Kildare last week.

It was confirmed by An Garda Siochana that the man was fatally injured as a result of the work-related accident that occurred at approximately 2:40pm on Thursday afternoon, February 15.

The accident is understood to have occurred at a Kildare Chilling factory, located on the Dublin Road, Kildare.

An investigation into the accident is being carried out by the Health and Safety Authority of Ireland (HSA).

It has emerged that the young man involved in the accident was Alexandru Coceban, aged just 22.

It is understood that Coceban had arrived in Ireland a number of weeks ago from Moldova in order to find work.

Following the accident, a GoFundMe page was set up in order to cover the young man’s funeral costs and to repatriate his body to his native country.

Created on Saturday, February 17, the page raised just over €7,000 – meetings its original target – in the space of two days.

According to the fundraising page, the 22-year-old was the eldest in his family and had travelled to Ireland to help his family achieve a better quality of life.

Coceban had only recently started working in the Kildare Chilling factory and hadn’t even got the chance to enjoy his first pay cheque, which he was due to receive on the day the accident occurred, the page added.

Reports suggest that the young man was killed as a result of an accident involving a forklift.
