Ballyjamesduff Mart will host the dispersal sale of the Ballycannon dairy herd on behalf of Pat Shanahan, Croagh, Co. Limerick, on Saturday (March 27). Pat has decided to sell for health reasons.

The sale will consist of the freshly-calved milking portion of the herd, with the remainder of herd to be sold at a later date. All cows on offer are calved since February 1 and ready to fill the bulk tank for their new owners.

Last year the herd averaged 8,600L at 3.75% fat and 3.29% protein, with the latest bulk tank results showing fat at 4.15% and protein at 3.37%.

In total, there will be 60 head of cattle put forward for sale on the day including 25 freshly-calved heifers; 32 freshly-calved cows; a pedigree Holstein bull; and a pedigree Hereford bull.

Speaking ahead of the sale, mart manager John Telvin stated: ”This sale is not to be missed, we have already had enquires from all over Ireland and the UK.”

Classification Update

Before the sale the Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA) has reclassified the Ballycannon herd, resulting in nine excellent (EX) and 27 very good (VG) cows.

Also, included in the sale are 17 two-year-old freshly-calved heifers, which have scored as high as VG87.
