A dispersal sale of 150 Suffolk and Suffolk cross ewes with lambs at foot is set to take place on Thursday next (March 18) at Carnew Mart.

The ewes are being brought forward for sale by Sean O’Connor and Niamh Hennessy.

The consignment on offer will consist of two, three and four-year-old ewes. The ewes will have approximately 1.5 lambs at foot and more in some cases. All lambs on the day will range from three up to five weeks-of-age.

Speaking to AgriLand about the upcoming dispersal sale, Sean said: “They’re a genuine bunch of ewes. We probably should have sold them in-lamb but for a number of different reasons, we just didn’t get the chance to.

“The reason for selling is that we are going into dairy. We are lambing 400 ewes here at the minute, so we’ll see how we get on Thursday and if we get on well we might have another bunch to go after that.

We have thought long and hard about it and we got some good advice from Teagasc who spoke and visited us here and we have done up the figures and we feel we would be better off going into milk.

“Having to work-full time off-farm and then come home and try to manage the number of ewes we keep, it just means we are going nonstop and have no time to ourselves.

“If we go into milk, the plan is to milk 60 cows. We don’t plan on going mad with cow numbers.”
