The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has published the winter barley recommended lists for 2025.

The fully recommended listing comprises six varieties:

Belfry is an early maturing hybrid six-row variety with high yield potential. It has long straw with good resistance to lodging and moderate resistance to straw breakdown.

Belfry demonstrates moderate resistance to mildew and brown rust but good resistance to both  rhynchosporium and net blotch. The variety is characterised by a small grain size and a good hectolitre weight.

Cassia is a moderately early maturing two-row variety. It has short straw, demonstrating moderate resistance to lodging and  straw breakdown.

Cassis demonstrates good resistance to brown rust and net blotch. It is moderately susceptible to mildew and susceptible to rhynchosporium. The variety is characterised by good grain quality and a very good hectolitre weight.

Joyau  is a very early maturing conventional six row variety with very high yield potential. It has oderately short straw, showing  good resistance to lodging and straw breakdown. Moderately susceptible to mildew.

The variety is moderately resistant to rhynchosporium. It demonstrates good resistance to brown rust and net blotch. Grain quality is good.

The breeder has a claim that this variety is tolerant to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV).

Tardis is a moderately early maturing, high yielding two row variety. It has a short straw length with good resistance to lodging and moderate resistance to straw breakdown.

Molly is moderately resistant to mildew and brown rust but demonstrates good resistance to rhynchosporium and net blotch. Grain quality is good.

Molly is an early maturing two-row barley variety. It has moderately short straw length with moderate susceptibility to lodging and straw breakdown.

The variety shows good resistance to mildew, brown rust, rhyncosporium and net blotch.

The breeder has a claim that this variety is resistant to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV).

Armadillo  is an early maturing six-row hybrid variety with very high yield potential. It has very long straw with moderate resistance to lodging and straw breakdown.

The variety is moderately resistant to mildew. It demonstrates good resistance to rhynchosporium. Armadillo is moderately susceptible to brown rust, but has good resistance to net blotch.

It is characterised by a small grain size and a good hectolitre weight.

The provisionally recommended list comprises three varieties: Orcade, Integral and SY Canyon

Integral is a very early maturing, very high yielding, six-row variety.  It has a moderately short straw length  with good resistance to lodging and moderate resistance to straw breakdown.

Orcade is a high yielding, moderately early maturing two-row variety. It has short straw and is moderately resistant to lodging and straw breakdown. The variety has good resistance to mildew, rhynchosporium and net blotch.

SY Canyon is an early maturing six-row hybrid variety with high yield potential. It has a long straw length with and demonstrates moderate resistance to lodging. The variety is  moderately susceptibility to straw breakdown.
