Emyvale Tidy Towns has commended the work of Monaghan County Council following a poultry waste spill on the main street today (Monday, November 25).

The incident occurred between the shop and pharmacy, near the pedestrian crossing, which was “extremely busy” with people walking to and from at the time, according to the tidy towns.

Motorists were advised to avoid the village initially, however the road has since been cleared.

Monaghan County Council were quick to respond by sending members of its environmental department, who used a sweeper at first and then a hose for washing.

It is believed the incident occurred due to a faulty set of traffic lights at the pedestrian crossing, causing sudden breaking from oncoming traffic, according to Emyvale Tidy Towns.

“Its the only crossing in the whole village. We would call for more pedestrian crossings near the credit union and the shop, the area is very dangerous with heavy traffic,” a representative for the tidy towns committee told Agriland.

The council has temporarily turned the lights off, and a replacement has been secured, which will be changed in due course.
