Ballyjamesduff Mart recently held the on-farm reduction sale of the Coolmohan herd for owners Pat and Nora Flynn, Kilworth, Co. Cork.
The sale took place last Saturday (March 20) with cows, heifers and 15 pedigree Holstein bulls included in the sale on the day.
The Coolmohan herd is currently averaging 7,900L at 4.29% fat and 3.87% protein; last year the herd produced 647kg of milk solids (ms)/cow.
The herd was formerly the number one economic breeding index (EBI) herd in Ireland for two years running, with current EBI as high €257 for the milking portion of the herd.
All animals on offer at the sale were export tested.
Manager’s Comments
After the sale, AgriLand spoke with John Tevlin, manager of the Cavan-based mart, to gain some insight into this special sale.
Commenting on the sale, John said: ”It was a brisk trade, like we have seen at all our dairy sales so far this year. We had a large number of buyers, which meant no one was able to buy in big numbers.
”We had buyers from all over the country, with over 50% of the animals heading for export to Northern Ireland.
”The top price of the day went to a freshly-calved heifer at €2,830, with the top price paid for a bull being €2,700.”

- Maiden heifers made between €1,310-1,400;
- Bulls made between €1,570-2,700.
Upcoming Ballycannon herd dispersal sale
John concluded by saying: ”We have another upcoming farm sale this Saturday (March 27), on the farm of Pat Shanahan, Croagh, Co. Limerick.
”Pat who has built up the Ballycannon herd over a number of years, will hold a dispersal sale of the spring-calving portion of the herd, due to health reasons.”
In total there will be 60 head put forward on the day, including 25 freshly-calved heifers; 32 freshly-calved cows; a pedigree Holstein bull from the Peitje’s; and a pedigree Hereford bull.
