Conference to focus on improving profitability in beef production

Industry representatives have come together to arrange a conference – ‘Healthy Cattle, Healthy Profits’ – looking at ways to improve profitability in beef.

The last three years have seen an increase in fallen stock numbers in Northern Ireland, with over 60,000 cattle expected to die on farms this year.

It’s thought to be worth as much as between £40 million and £50 million a year to the local industry.

The conference organised by the Ulster Farmers’ Union, the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI), the Livestock and Meat Commission for Northern Ireland (LMC), and the National Beef Association will take place on Wednesday, November 21, 2018, at Greenmount College.

Profitability in beef

Speakers will look at what common issues are showing up in post-mortem results and how health planning can reduce those losses.

There will also be representatives discussing farm building designs to actively improve animal health in attendance.

Delegates can also hear from specialist farmers from across the UK on the unique systems and processes in place on their own farms.

Conall Donnelly from the Northern Ireland Meat Exporters’ Association will complete the line-up by giving the latest overview on industry leaders’ thinking on the implications of Brexit for Northern Ireland beef industry.
