The new chairperson designate of Bord Bia is due to appear before the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine this evening (Wednesday, April 10).

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue appointed Larry Murrin to the role last month to succeed the outgoing chair, Dan MacSweeney.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Jackie Cahill said that one of the roles of joint committees is to meet with the new chairperson designate of a State body.

“Members welcome this opportunity to meet with Mr. Murrin to discuss his strategic priorities for Bord Bia.

“We look forward to a wide-ranging discussion about his vision for Bord Bia and the global promotion of Ireland’s world class food and drink sector during the term of his appointment,” he said.

Bord Bia

Larry Murrin is co-founder and chief executive of Dawn Farms which was established in 1985.

The Meath native is a past president of IBEC and was chair of Food and Drink Industry Ireland (FDII) for 12 years.

He also served on the Consumer Foods Board of Bord Bia since its inception and has been appointed to numerous committees in the agri-food sector including Food Harvest 2020, Food Wise 2025 and the more recent Food Vision 2030.

The position of chair of Bord Bia is for a period of three years and the appointment has been made following a competitive process managed by the State Boards service of the Public Appointments Service (PAS).

Committee

The committee will also hold a separate discussion on the European Commission’s antitrust guidelines for sustainability agreements in agriculture which were adopted in December.

Members will be addressed by Henrieta Jany-Roskova from the Directorate-General of Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI).

“These guidelines are intended to clarify how operators active in the agri-food sector can design joint sustainability initiatives in line with the 2013 Regulation establishing a common organisation of markets in agricultural products.

“The committee looks forward to hearing from Ms Jany-Roskova about the implications of these guidelines for our agri-food businesses,” Deputy Cahill said.
