The Boortmalt malting barley price for harvest 2020 has finished at €173.73/t.
Growers who managed to meet malting barley standards will be paid €173.73/t as a base price if they did not fix any prices during the year. Growers who did fix prices will be paid €173.73/t on the remaining barley in their contract.
However, this season was a difficult one for malting barley growers and a large amount of barley intended for malting across the country did not make the grade.
Secondary growth, high-protein levels, fusarium, difficult harvest conditions and low yields were just some of the factors that made it challenging to meet specifications.
How is the price calculated?
The price is calculated by taking the average price of the Free-On-Board (FOB) Creil malting barley (Planet) price at close of business every Wednesday from week 13 of the year to week 38 (March 26 to September 16).
The price increased from €167/t in the early stages of the averaging process to a high of €180/t on May 20. The lowest price reported was €167/t and this price was reported on three occasions – March 26; April 1; and May 6.
The price hopped between €173/t and €174/t in August and was at €173.50/t on September 2.
On September 9 and September 16 the price had increased hitting €176/t and €177/t respectively.
