Avian influenza or Bird flu has been detected on a farm in the UK, according to the latest reports from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

It says that a duck breeding farm in Yorkshire has been affected and an exclusion zone has been put in place around the farm.

The Chief Veterinary Officer has confirmed that highly pathogenic avian influenza is present in England and a protection zone of 10km has been put in place around the farm in East Yorkshire.

It advises that there are two types of avian influenza and the main clinical signs of HPAI in birds are:

  • swollen head;
  • blue discolouration of neck and throat;
  • loss of appetite;
  • respiratory distress such as gaping beak, coughing, sneezing, gurgling, rattling;
  • diarrhoea; and,
  • fewer eggs laid.
