The Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) has elected Stephen Arthur as the new IFA National Dairy Committee, the association has confirmed.

Taking to Twitter to reveal the result, the organisation confirmed that Stephen Arthur has been appointed as successor to previous chairman Tom Phelan.

In the tweet, the IFA said: “Stephen Arthur has been elected chairman of the IFA Dairy Committee. He succeeds Tom Phelan and takes up the role immediately, having been acting chairman.

“He farms in Co Wicklow and previously served as chairman of FMP,” the tweet added.

A dairy farmer from Co. Wicklow and vice-chair of the dairy committee up to now, Arthur has been acting chairman following Phelan’s decision to step down back in February to contest an election for a seat on the board of Glanbia Co-op.

Arthur has previously been the chairman of the Fresh Milk Producers, who represent liquid milk suppliers in Ireland.

Meanwhile, the IFA will be announcing later today (Friday, April 16) who the next vice-chair of the organisation’s National Beef Committee will be.

Declan Hanrahan is the current vice-chair of the National Livestock Committee and his term in the role is now up for renewal.

Hanrahan took up the post in August 2020 after the then vice-chair, Brendan Golden, became the chairperson replacing Angus Woods at the time.
