Suckler farmers have been presented with a great opportunity to buy some outstanding cows at an upcoming suckler sale.
David, Teresa and Damien Power will sell some of their suckler herd next week; this comes as they embark on other farming interests.
The sale will encompass 32 in-calf cows with calves at foot. All of the cows have been scanned in-calf and are due to calve between December and January.
The Powers are also participants in the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) and a number of cows on offer are four and five-star rated.
The Powers’ herd, which has been breed over the last 30 years, exudes quality and profitability.
Limousin, Simmental, Angus and Charolais cross cows form the basis of the herd and it’s milking ability is said to be without parallel.
This is evident by the weaning rates achieved and weanlings regularly average 400kg at this time. An average price of €1,050 was received for last year’s weanlings and many of the purchasers were return buyers.
Many of the weanling heifers sold from the herd have gone on to make excellent cows in suckler herds throughout the country as well as in the Powers’ herd.
The family have been very particular with bull selection over the years and have infused specific blood lines from Limousin, Simmental, Belgian Blue and Charolais genetics to maximise weight gain.
Along with selecting for weight gain, sires are also picked on the basis of calving ease and milk and, as a result, cows and heifers rarely require assistance at calving.
Damien said: “We will be sorry to see the cows go; but we can assure their new owners that these females will be a great asset to any farmer’s herd.”
When and where?
The sale will take place at 12pm on Monday, July 17 in Carlow Mart. The Powers are happy for you to come and inspect the cattle prior to the sale at your convenience.
