The Teagasc Forestry Development Department has announced the winner of a category from its ongoing forest photo competition ‘Celebrating Our Forests’.

The winner of the category titled ‘Trees on the Farm’ is Ms. Zita Power, from Co. Wexford, currently residing in Co. Wicklow.

As Zita explains, her winning image, entitled ‘Feeding time under the oak tree’, “captures the wondrous sight of a piglet wrestling for milk against the backdrop of a lush oak tree”.

She describes this simple but captivating farm experience as “a welcome and well-needed break from the current chaos of the world”.

According to Teagasc, Zita’s winning image was selected from over 150 diverse images, featuring trees on the farm, recently submitted to Teagasc for Category 2 of the competition.

This competition, which will continue to invite entries from budding photographers over November, focuses on four separate forestry themes, each running over a fortnightly period.

As winner of the second category, ‘Trees on the Farm’, Zita will receive a voucher to the value of €250. Zita’s winning entry also progresses to the grand final on December 8.

On that date, she will be in contention, along with the three other category winners, to collect further vouchers worth €750. This will bring the overall competition winner’s prize to a value of €1,000, Teagasc says.

In congratulating Zita on her achievement, Teagasc forestry development officer Michael Somers said: “Zita’s captivating photo resonated with the judges.

“It provides a fine example of how trees, which represent a multipurpose resource, can fit in on the farm; enhancing the farm aesthetics and offering shelter for natural processes that are always a joy to behold,” he added.

Entries are now invited for the third category of the Teagasc forest photo competition – ‘Forest Wildlife and Plants’ – up to 5:00pm on November 12, 2020.

This ongoing competition is open to non-professional photographers and a maximum of one photo per participant is allowed for each category, Teagasc concludes.
