Do you live in a house using a domestic wastewater treatment system (i.e. septic tank or packaged treatment system) for wastewater disposal? If so, you are invited to participate in a 10-15 minute (anonymised) survey about system management.

The recently launched survey aims to investigate current household practices, awareness levels, opinions and preferences regarding operation of domestic wastewater treatment systems in Ireland.

The survey forms part of the EPA-funded research project REMARC (Remediation of Faulty Septic Tanks: A Mixed Methods Approach to Environmental Risk Communication). The project involves researchers from UCD, UCC and TU Dublin and aims to assist both top-down (government) and bottom-up (householder) system management.

At national level, it is increasingly acknowledged that current policies and supports relating to system maintenance may need revisiting.

The Water Action Plan 2024 published by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage) recognises the need for greater top-down engagement with domestic wastewater treatment system users to acknowledge their system management experiences and opinions.

Why partake?

Participation in the REMARC survey presents an opportunity for you to anonymously communicate your household experience with system management and what motivates or discourages you from maintaining or upgrading your system.

Your views will provide a basis for future policy change and design of supports for system users nationwide.

The survey is hosted on SurveyMonkey and takes roughly 10-15 minutes to complete. All survey data is confidential and anonymous; no participant details will be shared with any third party or made identifiable upon publication of results.

If you are aged 18+ and interested in sharing your experiences and views in managing your septic tank/packaged treatment system, the REMARC team warmly invites you to partake. Your time and effort is immensely valued!
