The new suckler scheme ceiling "needs to go further to reflect the realities of suckler farming", according to the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers' Association (ICSA).
ICSA suckler chair Jimmy Cosgrave has welcomed the opening of the 2025 Beef Welfare Scheme and the increase in the number of eligible animals.
“This year’s scheme is worth €28 million to the sector and offers straightforward, farmer-friendly actions aimed at improving calf welfare and animal performance," Cosgrave said.
"The modest increase in the number of animals eligible for payment is a positive step, but the ceiling still needs to go further to reflect the realities of suckler farming - particularly for those farming full-time."
The payment rates for the Beef Welfare Scheme are as follows:
When combined with the Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme, participants can receive up to €225 per cow/calf pair for the first 22 pairs.
“There aren’t many suckler farmers without money worries," Cosgrave continued.
"Any scheme that provides practical measures and a financial boost is to be welcomed, and I would encourage all eligible suckler farmers to consider applying.
"However, ICSA wants to see the support package increased to €300 per cow/calf pair, alongside a higher number of eligible animals.
"That is what’s needed to provide a sustainable income for full-time suckler farmers and safeguard the future of the sector.”
The closing date for applications is September 24, 2025.
