Pig markets

According to the latest weekly pig market update from the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) published today, the fattening pigs processed year to date in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) is almost running on par with last year’s throughput.

This year 1,489 fewer pigs have gone through the factories (-.1%). However, more sows have gone through the system this year, up 5%.

Compared to last year and up to week 32 this year, live pigs exported to Northern Ireland have also increased with 18,265 more pigs having been exported to the northern factories – an increase of 9%.

There was an announced drop in pig prices on Friday, August 23 of 6c/kg in ROI.

Factories and producers are reporting quotes of at least €2.34 – €2.40 available from processors in ROI.

Prices in Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom (UK) are still strong with strong demand for pigs, according to the IFA.

In the fist six months of 2024, Bord Bia stated that  there were notable increases in the value of the pigmeat export trade to the UK (+16% to €71 million), and EU markets (+25% to €59 million).

Meanwhile, there were declines in the value of Irish pigmeat exports during this period to Asian markets (-15% to €77 million) and Oceania (-37% to €16 million).
