Research reveals popularity of eggs to mark World Egg Day

To mark World Egg Day 2024 today (Friday, October 11), Bord Bia has released research that demonstrates eggs are more popular than ever with Irish consumers.

The findings reveal that one in three people claim to be consuming more eggs than last year and while breakfast remains the most popular mealtime to eat eggs, research is showing that people are eating eggs throughout the day.

Over 655 million eggs were purchased by Irish consumers, a 6% increase* on the same period last year. This is driven by more consumers purchasing eggs more frequently when shopping, according to Bord Bia.

To celebrate World Egg Day this year, Bord Bia has teamed up with Olympic track and field finalist and Irish record holder Sophie Becker and Olympic bronze medallist rower Philip Doyle, to encourage Irish consumers to ‘Crack On’ in the kitchen with Bord Bia Quality Assured eggs.

Sophie and Philip regularly eat eggs to fuel their sports performance, so they are joining forces with Bord Bia to showcase just how versatile and nutritious eggs can be for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Speaking on the role that eggs and diet play in her performance, Sophie Becker commented:“I am still on a high after competing in the Paris Olympics. I want to build on this, so I have recently decided to go full time as an athlete to focus on achieving all I can in my sport.

"Diet will continue to play a crucial role in my overall training programme. Whether it’s banana pancakes in the morning or salmon and poached eggs in the evening, eggs are an easy, quick protein source that I love to cook and eat.

"I grew up on a farm in Wexford, so I appreciate locally sourced quality produce. For this reason, I always look for the Bord Bia Quality Mark when buying eggs”.

Philip Doyle added: “As a rower, I can burn as much as 2,000 calories in one single race. As a medical doctor, I understand that my body needs to be adequately fuelled with enough protein and complex carbohydrates to perform at the highest level and prevent injury.

"Whether I am training on the water or in the gym or working a long shift in the hospital, eggs deliver the protein and energy I need to perform at my very best”.
