On Feirm Ground 2 is an initiative designed to help professionals in the agriculture sector - such as advisers - learn skills that can help farmers with their health and wellbeing.
The programme is a continuation of the successful On Feirm Ground initially launched back in October 2020.
A spokesperson for the programme said it was set up as many farmers are considered 'hard to reach', and an agricultural professional may be the only person a farmer can open up to.
The programme is fully funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the Department of Health, and the Health Service Executive.
According to On Feirm Ground, over 1,000 people within the agricultural sector have already taken part in the initiative, receiving clear and practical training.
On Feirm Ground 2 teaches agricultural professionals the skills and knowledge to engage farmers on their health and wellbeing.
The programme is suited to all agricultural professionals who engage with farmers in person on a farm, over the phone, or in an office.
The course is a unit of the 'Engage National Men's Health' programme, in conjunction with the Men's Development Network and Engage Training Partners.
The programme is comprised of evidence-based modules, delivered in a two-hour flexible online course, followed by a one-day in-person workshop.
On Feirm Ground 2 coordinator, Stephen Mbwika said: “Whether you’re an agri-professional or a service provider looking to be better equipped for real-life conversations with farmers, this training could be one of the most meaningful professional days you take this year."
One of the past trainees stated that the “programme is very useful for anyone working with farmers.
"The facilitators are excellent. It builds great confidence in knowing what to do when you encounter farmers who may be overwhelmed by the challenges they face.”
Another participant added: “I feel I now have sound coping options to safeguard my own wellbeing and guidance to appropriately assist farmers in difficult situations.”
The programme has ensured that the course is not just for staff who are regularly on farms, stating that it is a great skill for administrative officers as well.
One administrative worker who completed the course said; “I found the course very helpful for my daily dealings with farmers, both on the phone and face to face. I’m more aware of signs to look out for and know where to direct someone if needed."
