Most soils are currently close to saturation with very little improvement expected over the coming week, according to the latest farming commentary by Met Éireann.

In some northern and western areas some light soils are trafficable, while most poorly drained soils are waterlogged, the national forecaster said.

Drying conditions will often be moderate or poor with rain or showers on most days over the next week. Opportunities for spraying will generally be limited.

In the coming week, rainfall totals are expected to be above normal with around 40-60mm in many areas and up to 70mm or slightly above in parts of the southwest and west.

Some eastern parts may have slightly less rainfall, more in the range of 30mm. Parts of Leinster already recorded above average rainfall in places over the past week.

Rainfall amounts were below average across Ulster and Connaught. It was wettest across parts of Munster with over 34mm reported at Shannon Airport and in Valentia, Co. Kerry.

Temperatures and sunshine

Temperatures this coming week will be above average with temperatures 2° to 3° above average in many areas. Mean soil temperatures will continue above average.

Mean air temperatures over the last week were above average in most areas, ranging from 6.2° at Knock Airport to 9° in Valentia, according to Met Éireann.

Mean soil temperatures are generally 1° to 2° above average at the moment. Soil temperatures have generally ranged between 5.8° at Knock Airport to 8.4°in Valentia.

Sunshine amounts were above average in parts of the west over the past week, but elsewhere it was duller with sunshine below average, according to Met Éireann.

The sunniest location was Belmullet, Co. Mayo, recording 23.7h of sunshine, which is 1115% of its average. It was dullest in Valentia with 6.7h recorded, which is 34% of its average.

The weather will be unsettled for the coming week with some cloudy and wet spells and just occasional drier and sunnier periods. Sunshine amounts are likely to be below average.

Weather warnings

A Status Orange rain warning is currently in place for counties Cork and Kerry, with persistent rain, heavy at times, strong onshore winds, high times, and elevated river levels.

Flooding, wave overtopping, and difficult travelling conditions are expected in Cork and Kerry until 12:00p.m tomorrow (Thursday, March 14).

A Status Yellow rain warning is also currently in place for Waterford, with a potential for localised flooding, wave overtopping, and difficult travelling conditions.

In Waterford, persistent rain, which will be heavy at times, accompanied by strong onshore winds and high tides will continue until 12:00p.m tomorrow.

Rain may also lead to localised flooding, wave overtopping, and difficult driving conditions in Galway from midnight tonight until 12:00a.m on Friday (March 15).
