The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon has been asked to outline the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine's (DAFM) main policy achievements since January 23, 2025, when he became minister.
Minister Heydon was asked about his achievements by Fianna Fáil TD for Clare, Cathal Crowe in a parliamentary question this week (July 15, 2025).
In his response, the minister said that DAFM will continue to facilitate "the ongoing sustainable development" of the agri-food sector.
The first achievement that Minister Heydon listed was for "continued support to farmers" under the €9.8 billion Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Strategic Plan, and through specific sectoral supports.
"It is positive to see the Teagasc National Farm Survey preliminary results estimate that the average farm income in 2024 rose by 87%, and that 2025 income forecasts are also positive. Preparations for a new round of CAP have also commenced," the minister said.
The minister also listed the ongoing implementation of Food Vision 2030 as an achievement of DAFM since he took office in January.
Food Vision 2030 is the shared stakeholder-led strategy for the continuing development of the agri-food sector, including progress across the dairy, beef and sheepmeat, tillage, horticulture, organics, and forestry sectors. A new dashboard to track economic, environmental, and social progress has been launched.
The third achievement listed by Minister Heydon was the re-establishment of a dedicated Minister of State for Fisheries and Marine issues, Timmy Dooley.
On top of this, the minister noted the allocation of €27.75 million for capital projects in Ireland's publicly owned harbours through the 2025 Fishery Harbour Centre and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme.
Minister Heydon listed the signing of a €105 million partnership agreement with the World Food Programme, which he said is the "world's largest humanitarian organisation".
He also highlighted the launch of phase two of the VistaMilk Research Ireland Centre, at a cost of €26.2 million, and the launch of DAFM's €30 million Thematic Research Call 2025.
The minister listed the allocation of €17.8 million to eleven new projects on the theme of environmental sustainability, under the European Innovation Partnership measure of the CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027, as an achievement.
Another achievement listed by Minister Heydon, is the official opening of the National Centre for Brewing and Distilling in Oatpark, Teagasc, which has been allocated funding of €2.3 million by DAFM since 2020.
He also noted the launch of a €10 million fund for projects under the Bioeconomy Demonstration Initiative, €300,000 in funding to 22 local agri-food tourism projects, and the establishment of the One Health oversight committee.
