Met Éireann warns of snow and ice in several counties

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning for snow and ice in several counties over the coming days.

As temperatures are set to drop, the national forecaster has issued the warning for counties Cavan; Donegal; Leitrim; Monaghan; and Sligo.

The alert will be valid from midnight on Wednesday (November 19) until 12:00p.m on Thursday.

There will be wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow in these areas, with "some modest accumulations in places", especially on high ground.

The freezing conditions will bring a risk of icy stretches and hazardous travelling conditions.

The UK Met Office has issued a similar warning for Antrim; Armagh; Down; Fermanagh; Tyrone and Derry.

It said that wintry showers on Tuesday night into Wednesday will bring some icy patches and lying snow in places, leading to possible travel delays

The weather forecast is for a cold and breezy night ahead under long clear spells.

The scattered showers will become increasingly confined to the north and west.

Some of the showers will turn wintry with hail and sleet, and possibly some snow too, especially about higher ground.

Lowest overnight temperatures of -1° to 3°C with some frost and icy patches in moderate to fresh and gusty northerly winds, stronger along exposed coasts.

Wednesday will be a cold day with sunshine and scattered showers, some of them wintry with hail and sleet.

Some snow showers are possible, mainly over higher ground in the north and northwest. Highest temperatures of just 3° to 7°, but feeling even colder with an added wind chill factor from moderate to fresh north to northwest winds which will be stronger near exposed coasts.
