Mart report: Cattle and sheep prices over past week at Ballinrobe

Ballinrobe Mart in Co. Mayo hosted its weekly general cattle sale on Wednesday, June 10, and its weekly general sheep sale on Thursday, June 11.

Speaking to Agriland after the sale, mart manager Teresa Gibsey gave an overview of the trade in both sales.

In the cattle sale, heifers sold from €840-€1,660/head or €2.37-€4.68/kg.

Heifers in the 400-500kg weight range averaged €3.26/kg or €1,435/head with a top price of €3.90/kg.

In the 300-400kg range, heifers averaged €3.62/kg or €1,270/head with a high of €4.68/kg.

Heifers weighing under 300kg averaged €3.98/kg or €960/head with a top price of €4.45/kg or €1,180/hd.

Top heifer prices from Ballinrobe Mart:

  • 495kg Angus heifer sold for €1,660 or €3.35/kg;
  • 420kg Charolais heifer sold for €1,640 or €3.90/kg;
  • 310kg Charolais heifer sold for €1,450 or €4.68/kg;
  • 338kg Hereford heifer sold for €1,230 or €3.64/kg;
  • 320kg Angus heifer sold for €1,290 or €4.03/kg;
  • 265kg Charolais heifer sold for €1,180 or €4.45/kg;
  • 235kg Aubrac heifer sold for €910 or €3.87/kg;
  • 225kg Charolais heifer sold for €840 or €3.73/kg.

In the bullock sale, prices ranged from €710-€1,880/head or €2.65-€3.74/kg.

The bullocks weighing over 500kg averaged €3.46/kg or €1,830/head.

Bullocks in the 400-500kg weight range averaged €3.62/kg or €1,707/head.

In the 300-400kg weight bracket, bullocks averaged €2.28/kg or €825/head, according to a sale report from the mart venue.

  • 545kg Friesian bullock sold for €1,810 or €3.32/kg;

  • 355kg Angus bullock sold for €940 or €2.65/kg.

Dry cows ranged in price from €1,040-€1,890/head, with an average price in the sale of €1,738/head or €2.80/kg.

  • 2018-born Simmental cow weighing 615kg sold for €1,890 or €3.07/kg;
  • 2023-born Charolais cow weighing 570kg sold for €1,800 or €3.16/kg;
  • 2010-born Limousin cow weighing 660kg sold for €1,780 or €2.70/kg;
  • 2020-born Simmental cow weighing 600kg sold for €1,770 or €2.95/kg.

A May-born Limousin-cross bull calf weighing 60kg sold for €480.

Sheep sale report from Ballinrobe

In the sheep sale on Thursday, June 11, spring lambs made from €3.92-€4.71/kg and averaged €4.40/kg, up €0.35/kg on last week

On a price per head basis, spring lambs made from €140-€232/head and averaged €182/head.

Hoggets sold from €3.45-€4.00/kg and averaged €3.85/kg, up €0.17/kg on last week. Price per head ranged from €142-€208 and averaged €192.

Sample lamb prices from the sheep sale:

  • 50kg lambs sold for €232/head or €4.64/kg;
  • 43.5kg lambs sold for €205/head or €4.71/kg;
  • 47.5kg lambs sold for €220/head or €4.63/kg;
  • 46kg lambs sold for €215/head or €4.67/kg;
  • 40.5kg lambs sold for €187head or €4.62/kg;
  • 35.5kg lambs sold for €162/head or €4.56/kg.
  • 49kg lambs sold for €220/head or €4.49/kg.

Factory type cull ewes ranged from €1.33-€3.14/kg and averaged €2.34/kg, up €0.38c/kg.

Cull ewe prices per head ranged from €106-€250 and averaged €175.25/head.

Ewes with lambs at foot ranged in price from €150-€345/outfit.
