The Irish Hereford Breed Society hosted a heifer show and sale on Saturday, December 14, at GVM Tullamore Mart, Co. Offaly.

There were 18 pedigree Hereford heifers on offer with 17 of these selling on the day and an average sale price of €3,170 achieved.

The auctioneer was Eamonn Gaffney and the judge in the pre-sale show was Philip Lynch.

An entry from Co. Monaghan-based Hereford breeder, Nigel Heatrick was tapped forward as Champion on the day.

The in-calf heifer, Glaslough Yoselin was sired by Cill Cormaic Quinlan and out of homebred cow, Glaslough Texas.

Standing at Reserve Champion was Sarah and Heidi Murray’s maiden heifer, Shiloh-Farm Jasmine PH. This Corlismore Cormac daughter, out of Shiloh-Farm Heather had previously come out on top in a very competitive show class.

The Champion in the pre-sale show Glaslough Yoselin went on to sell for €4,400, with Reserve Champion Shiloh-Farm Jasmine selling at €4,250.

Taking the top price on the day was the five-star, second prize winner from class 4, Appel 1 Molly 15 from Cork breeder, John Appelbe. Selling at €4,500 this heifer was bought by Michael Bird and goes to the Dunlever Herd in Co. Meath.

In total, five heifers made over €4,000, with Nigel Heatrick’s Glaslough Annabelle and John Appelbe’s Appel 1 Beautiful both selling for €4,000.

Three other heifers went on to reach over €3,000. Roscommon breeder, Coman Neary’s in-calf heifer, Clooncullane Edie, went on to sell for €3,500.

Midlands breeder, Aidan Farrell from Co. Westmeath, received €3,400 for his in-calf heifer, Mountwilliams Rachell and Co. Carlow breeder, James Thompson sold Ballyraggan Lark for €3,200.

A statement from the Irish Hereford Breed Society said the society was “delighted with the success of this new sale, which was the final sale of a very successful 2024”.

The society expressed its thanks to all who supported the sale and wished all purchasers the best of luck with their new heifers.
