Gardaí are today (Saturday, September 28) appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in Co. Mayo which involved a tractor and a car.

The occupants of the car, a teenage boy and a man aged in his late teens, were fatally injured in the collision which occurred on the N83, Levallyroe, Co. Mayo yesterday evening, (Friday, September 27).

A third occupant, another teenage boy, was transferred to Mayo University Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The driver of the tractor, a male in his 50s was also taken to Mayo University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

A Garda family liaison officer has been assigned to support the families of the deceased.

Road traffic collision

The N83 road in Levallyroe, Co. Mayo, where the collision took place, remains closed at this time to facilitate a technical examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to contact them and they have also requested that road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the incident to make this available to them.

According to latest statistics more than 130 people have lost their lives on Irish roads this year.

Taoiseach

Separately Taoiseach Simon Harris has paid tribute to former Assistant Garda Commissioner John O’Driscoll, who passed away yesterday.

John O’Driscoll served as An Garda Síochána for 41 years.

The Taoiseach said: “John was a distinguished member of An Garda Síochána who served the force with such integrity.

He was a very respected and admired member of the garda family and a true leader. I know the entire garda family will be mourning his loss today.

He also extended his condolences to John’s colleagues and his wife Muriel and children, Michelle, Laura and Seán.
