Herdwatch will host a live webinar on farm safety on Tuesday, July 21, at 7:30pm as part of Farm Safety Week, the agri-tech firm has announced.

Farm Safety Week takes place next week – from Monday to Friday, July 20 to 24 – to help raise awareness of how you can protect yourself and your family on the farm.

In this webinar Alma Jordan from AgriKids and Jim Dockery of FRS Network will discuss safety on farms and how to help educate kids (big and small) on the dangers that exist on farms today.

The event is open to everyone and you can register by going to the Herdwatch website.

If you are not free at that time, you don’t have to miss out. If you register, you will be sent a copy of the video to watch after the event.

Mervyn Harvey from Herdwatch commented, saying:

At the start of the current crisis, a friend of mine had a very lucky escape when out driving stakes on his own and, on another day, that could have been completely different.

“At Herdwatch, our aim is to help farmers improve their farm operations every day and, with the support of AgriKids and FRS Network, this will be an opportunity to hear first-hand just how small changes can make your farm a much safer place.”

14 fatalities on farms this year

The increased calls for farm safety comes after 14 farm deaths have been reported so far this year.

Three of the fatalities involved children and nine involved people over the age of 65.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) plans to inspect 200 farms as part of a two-week inspection ‘blitz’ to highlight safety issues in order to reduce fatalities and serious incidents.

A large proportion of all workplace fatalities occur in agriculture, even though a small proportion (5%) of the national workforce is employed in the sector.
