Life in rural Ireland is rewarding, but it comes with its challenges. Farming pressures, financial uncertainty, and social isolation, are just some of the factors that can take a toll on our mental health, leaving many feeling overwhelmed or alone.
That’s where Make the Moove comes in. This pioneering mental health initiative supports rural communities by tackling these challenges head-on.
Through tailored resources, initiatives, and support, the programme empowers people to prioritise their mental well-being, helping them connect, cope, and thrive.
What Is Make the Moove?
Make the Moove is a nationwide mental health and well-being programme established by Macra, and is dedicated to supporting farmers, farm families and rural communities.
Recognising the unique pressures of rural life, the programme offers a range of services that combine direct support with initiatives to reduce stigma and provide practical tools to help rural communities thrive.
At its core, are five key pillars that underpin the programme:
- A dedicated helpline – The Make the Moove helpline is a cornerstone of the programme, offering a lifeline to anyone in rural Ireland facing mental health challenges. Accessible and confidential, the helpline is staffed by trained and compassionate individuals who provide a listening ear, practical guidance, and referrals to additional support services when needed. Whether you’re a farmer overwhelmed by seasonal pressures or a rural resident feeling isolated, the helpline is there to ensure you’re never alone in your struggles. It’s a vital resource designed to provide immediate support when you need it.
- Counselling services – Recognising that some challenges require more in-depth support, Make the Moove offers accessible counselling tailored to the needs of rural communities. These services connect individuals and families with professional counsellors who understand the unique pressures of rural life. From managing stress and anxiety to working through personal or family issues, counselling provides a safe space to navigate challenges and build resilience. By bringing these services closer to rural areas, Make the Moove is helping to bridge the gap between rural communities and the mental health resources they need.
- Crisis response – In times of crisis, immediate and effective support is crucial. The Make the Moove crisis response team is equipped to step in during emergencies, providing swift assistance to communities facing serious mental health challenges. This includes connecting them with appropriate services, such as crisis counsellors, support groups, or healthcare professionals, and offering short-term interventions to stabilise situations. The goal is to provide reassurance and practical help in times of crisis, ensuring that no one faces urgent mental health struggles without support.
- Training – Education is a powerful tool in improving mental health outcomes and Make the Moove delivers tailored training to empower rural communities. Workshops and courses cover topics such as stress management, resilience-building, and recognising the signs of mental health struggles in others. These sessions are designed to equip farmers, rural families, and community leaders with the tools and confidence to address mental health proactively. By normalising conversations around well-being and teaching practical strategies, Make the Moove is fostering a culture where mental health is prioritised and supported at every level.
- Awareness – Stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to seeking help in rural communities and Make the Moove is dedicated to changing that. Through targeted campaigns, events, and partnerships, the programme is opening up the conversation around mental health and challenging outdated attitudes. Whether it’s through social media, community talks, or awareness initiatives, Make the Moove is spreading the message that mental health matters. These efforts aim to encourage open discussions, reduce stigma, and empower individuals to take the first step towards seeking help.
