Excise clearances of marked gas oil, also referred to as ‘green diesel’, in April were 5% higher when compared with the same month in 2024, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The latest data published today (June 9) shows that excise clearances of green diesel stood at 103 million litres in the month of April 2025, up from 98 million litres in April 2024.
According to the CSO, clearances reflect the duty paid on oil removed from bonded warehouses. The data provides “a proxy for sales”, but do not reflect actual consumption.
The data shows that excise clearances of auto diesel in April 2025 stood at 292 million litres, 3% higher than the April 2024 figure of 285 million litres.
In April 2025, unleaded petrol excise clearances, at 94 million litres, were 12.5% higher than the April 2024 figure of 84 million litres.
Kerosene excise clearances were 62 million litres, down 18% compared with the April 2024 figure of 76 million litres.
Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, statistician in the climate and energy division, said: "Autodiesel clearances fell by 5% in the first four months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. They were 3% lower when comparing the 12-month rolling period of May 2024 -April 2025, with May 2023 - April 2024.
"Unleaded Petrol clearances were 4% higher in the first four months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. They were also up 4% when comparing the 12-month rolling period of May 2024 - April 2025 with May 2023 - April 2024," she added.
Moran noted that marked gas oil is primarily used for off-road purposes such as agriculture and the heating of larger buildings.
"Marked Gas Oil clearances were 5% higher in the first four months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024 ," she said.
"The monthly mean air temperature at Dublin Airport in April 2025 was 9.6℃, this was the highest April mean air temperature at Dublin Airport since 2011. This may have been a contributing factor to kerosene excise clearances being 18% lower when comparing April 2025 with April 2024," she added.
