A ‘do not consume’ water notice remains in place for the Annagh Group Water Scheme in Co. Cavan, due to high nitrite levels, according to Cavan County Council.
Following consultation with the HSE, the council stated that water was “considered to be significantly compromised” and an “immediate risk” to health.
Nitrite is typically found in low amounts, except in environments with an absence of oxygen, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The notice applies to all areas on the group water scheme, including Redhills and Ballyhaise customers. The council has reminded customers that water is not safe to drink once boiled.
Internal water supply can still be used for the following: Personal hygiene (showering/bathing); Flushing toilets; and laundry and washing utensils.

Sinn Féin councillor Stiofán Conaty said that three tests showing clear water results will be needed before restrictions are lifted, with supply issues “expected” to continue into next week.
“People understand there is supply issues and they have patience for that, but some people think there is a lack of communication,” Cllr. Conaty said.
In the meantime, alternative supplies are being provided in Redhills Village and at Annagh Lake, where water must be boiled before consuming.
Cllr. Conaty said that there was a “gap” in water resources for the Ballyhaise area, and that work is being done to ensure that resources will be in place if such an incident were to reoccur.
Cavan County Council stated that it will continue to liaise with the HSE and the group water scheme with a view to lift restrictions “as soon as practicable”.
