Cattle and agri products on EU possible tariffs 'countermeasures' list

The European Commission has published a list of current US imports, worth in the region of €95 billion, which could be subject to new "EU countermeasures" if current negotiations with the US do not result in the "removal of US tariffs".

The list, which covers 217 pages, published today (Thursday, May 8) is wide-ranging and includes a "broad range of industrial and agricultural products" originating in or from the US.

The commission is now inviting "anyone affected by potential rebalancing measures" that the EU may take against the US to submit their views to the commission in an open consultation until June 10.

The list published today includes live cattle, live sheep, and also frozen or fresh beef cuts, and poultry, pig and fish products.

It also includes potatoes, various vegetables and fruits, cereals, oils, vegetable fats, sugar, chocolate and cocoa powder, and soya.

There is also an extensive range of alcoholic drinks from bourbon whiskey to various spirits on the list.

The European Commission said today that since the US "imposed its unjustified and harmful tariffs", it has prioritised finding a mutually beneficial and balanced solution through negotiations.

It has outlined that these negotiations are "ongoing both at political and technical level".

But in the meantime EU is preparing potential countermeasures "in case these fail to deliver a satisfactory outcome".

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said: "Tariffs are already having a negative impact on the global economies.

"The EU remains fully committed to finding negotiated outcomes with the US. We believe there are good deals to be made for the benefit of consumers and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.

"At the same time, we continue preparing for all possibilities, and the consultation launched today will help guide us in this necessary work".

Also included in the EU list of products which could be "subject to possible commercial policy measures" are tyres, pipes and hoses, steel products, tools, pumps, and dryers for agricultural products.

The EU list also includes rotovators for use in agriculture, horticulture and forestry, haymaking and harvesting machinery, parts of milking machines and dairy machinery, and forestry machinery.

Separately today the EU also intends to launch a World Trade Organisation (WTO) dispute against the US on President Trump's “reciprocal” tariffs and tariffs on cars and car parts.

Maros Sefcovic, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency said the US tariffs are "unjustified and in clear breach of global trade rules".

"The EU stands firm as a steadfast advocate for fair, rules-based international trade," he added.
