Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Agriculture Éamon Ó Cuív TD is calling for an Oireachtas debate on Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Reform.

He has written to the chair of the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee seeking its input into the implementation of the CAP agreement.

Deputy Ó Cuív said: “I have written to the Chairperson of the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee, Andrew Doyle TD, asking that the committee have an opportunity to contribute to the debate on the CAP implementation.

“At that meeting, which is set to take place next week, I will be seeking the input of the committee into CAP Reform. It is vital that no decision is made by Minister Simon Coveney before he hears the views of the Agriculture Committee.

“The Oireachtas Agriculture Committee must have the opportunity to examine all the options and proposals in detail. The Committee has submitted representations to the Minister, which need to be discussed. Farming groups and experts should also be afforded an opportunity to be brought in to the Committee as witnesses.”

A consultation process is currently under way with the Department of Agriculture with all relevant stakeholders to ascertain views on the most appropriate application of the new CAP regime. The deadline for submission is 20 September.
