Bord Bia board due to meet to discuss governance review

Agriland understands that the board of Bord Bia is due to meet on Friday (June 12) to discuss a review into the governance of the Irish Food Board.

The review, commissioned by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), was part of the agreement that ended farmer protests at Bord Bia headquarters earlier this year.

The Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) had staged the rolling protest over several weeks calling for Larry Murrin's resignation or removal as chair of Bord Bia.

It followed confirmation that Murrin's company, Dawn Farm Foods, sourced 1% of its beef supply from Brazil in 2025.

Larry Murrin, who remains as Bord Bia chair, has stated he has "never been conflicted" in undertaking his role at Bord Bia, which he said "is to lead the board and ensure its effectiveness".

The protest, which also saw five IFA members occupy the Bord Bia offices, was stood down on March 2 as agreement was reached on an independent review.

During the period of the review, it was agreed that scheduled board meetings would be facilitated by another current board member.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon previously confirmed to Agriland that independent consultancy firm Governance Ireland was "given a tender and a contract to carry out the review".

The review had initially been expected to be completed by April 30, however the minister subsequently said that timeline would not be met.

Bord Bia chief executive officer (CEO) Jim O'Toole recently said the review was "ongoing", adding it was expected to be finished by the end of June.

It is believed the review into the governance of Bord Bia will examine, the role of the board, including the chair; the board composition, including eligibility of the board, including the chair; and the terms of reference for the board.

The review was also expected to consider the procedures for and management of conflicts of interest, including consideration of what constitutes a conflict of interest, or a perceived conflict of interest, as set out in the Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies.

Agriland understands that the directors of Bord Bia have now been invited to a meeting with the secretary general at DAFM to discuss the review on Friday (June 12).

It is believed that IFA National Council members were informed of the development this evening.

Agriland has contacted Bord Bia and DAFM for comment.
