Ballyjamesduff Mart held the dispersal sale of the Ballycannon dairy herd on Saturday (March 27) for Pat Shanahan, Croagh, Co. Limerick.

Pat made the decision to retire from farming and sell his herd, for to health reasons.

The sale consisted of the freshly-calved milking portion of the herd, with the remainder of the herd to be sold at a later date.

All cows that were sold on the day were freshly-calved since February 1 and were ready to fill the bulk tank for their new owners.

Last year the herd averaged 8,600L at  3.75% fat and 3.29% protein; the latest bulk tank results showed fat at 4.15% and protein at 3.37%.

In total there were 60 head put forward on the day and included: 25 freshly-calved heifers; 32 freshly-calved cows; a pedigree Holstein bull from the Peitje’s; and a pedigree Hereford bull.

The sale included some top cow families:

Mart manager’s comment

After the dispersal sale Agriland spoke with John Telvin, mart manager at the Cavan-based mart, to gain some insight into the sale.

Commenting on the sale, John said: ”We had another very good on-farm sale of an exceptionally good herd of cows, with a 100% clearance.

”We had a good number of Northern buyers, but they did not have it their own way with southern buyers being every bit as competitive.

”Top price of the day was Ballycannon D Twizzle Palmrock; she made €4,200, with the Holstein bull making €3,650.”

Highlights from the sale included:

  • Lot 5: Ballycannon AFT Silk 2 (EX92) made €3,650;
