The week ahead will start off windy and wet with heavy rain, easing as the week goes on to occasional showers with sunny spells, according to Met Eireann.

Following a very wet weekend in parts of the country, almost all land received above average rainfall last week, with up to twice normal totals being recorded in the midlands.

In the coming seven days, Met Eireann has said it is likely to be drier overall with many parts of the country accumulating less than 50% of normal rainfall for mid-April.

However, a band of rain over the country today, Monday, could bring totals to near normal in mid-Leinster and south Connacht.

Today is promised to be a mostly cloudy day with scattered outbreaks of rain but there will be some drier periods as well.

Rain is forecast to turn persistent and heavy in the east and northeast and spread westwards later in the day.

Top temperatures will range between 9 and 13 degrees today, in a moderate to fresh east to northeasterly breeze which is promised to ease towards evening.

Met Eireann has forecast tonight to continue to be mostly cloudy with further outbreaks of rain.

East to northeasterly winds are likely to be light to moderate generally but light variable over the southern half of the country.

Temperatures tonight will range between 4 and 6 degrees but these may fall to 2 to 3 degrees in southwestern and southern counties where Met Eireann has said cloud may break.

The past week was colder than usual countrywide, however temperatures look set to recover this week and soil temperatures should also increase as the week goes on.

Tomorrow, Tuesday is forecast to start off a dull or cloudy day with outbreaks of rain gradually easing and some bright or sunny spells developing later.

Top temperatures tomorrow are promised to be between 10 and 14 degrees in light southerly or variable breezes.

Tuesday night is forecast to become mostly dry with some clear spells and winds will fall light with mist or fog patches forming.

Lowest temperatures will fall to around 1 to 4 degrees, however, Met Eireann has said that it will be cloudier in parts of the southwest and north with outbreaks of rain there and lowest temperature staying around 5 or 6 degrees.

There will be occasional rain or showers with some bright spells on Wednesday and easterly winds are forecast to be mostly light as top temperatures reach 11 to 14 degrees.

Wednesday night is forecast to be a mostly dry night however rain is likely to affect parts of the south and north in light to moderate easterly breeze.

Thursday will be similar to Wednesday; a mostly dry day with some bright or sunny spells.

There will be some occasional showers and top temperatures will reach 14 degrees in parts in a moderate easterly breeze.

Current indications suggest that Friday will be a similar day with some bright or sunny spells with isolated showers.

Again, top temperatures will range between 9 to 14 degrees in a light to moderate north to northeasterly breeze.

According to Met Eireann, the latest weather charts suggest that the weather for next weekend will become less unsettled.
