Gardaí have confirmed that a 19-year-old man has died following an accident involving a tractor in Co. Galway yesterday (Saturday, November 2).

It is understood that the incident took place on a road in the Oranmore area in the mid-afternoon.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene with the injured man being brought to hospital where he later passed away.

An investigation into the incident is underway, while support is being offered to the family of the deceased man.

Tractor

In a statement to Agriland, a garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic incident near Oranmore, Co. Galway yesterday afternoon, Saturday November 2, 2024.

“Gardaí were alerted to an incident involving a tractor which occurred on a local road in Rinn, Oranmore at approximately 3:30p.m.

“A male passenger, 19-years-old, injured in the incident was transferred by ambulance personnel to University Hospital Galway, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.”

The garda spokesperson added that there were no other injuries reported following the incident.

“The scene was preserved for a technical examination which has since taken place and the road has reopened.

“A Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been appointed to support the family of the deceased. Investigations are ongoing,” they said.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) said that it is aware of this incident and have launched an investigation.

Gardaí attend road traffic accident

Separately, Gardaí in Co. Meath attended the scene of an overturned livestock lorry earlier this week.

The single vehicle incident happened on the N3 road at the Derver roundabout, close to the border with Co. Cavan, at around 8:30a.m on Tuesday (October 29).

The driver of the truck managed to escape injury in the incident, however it is understood that a number of animals were injured.

Gardaí and other members of the emergency services attended the scene, which included officers from counties Meath and Cavan.

The road was closed to traffic for several hours with local diversions put in place for motorists.
