‘New CAP, New Era’ is the theme of Macra na Feirme’s annual conference, sponsored by Dawn Meats and Ulster Bank.

Hosted by Cavan Macra, the annual conference will take place on the 26 October and will investigate the impact of the new Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) Reform on young farmers.

Nigel Hogan, conference organising committee said: “The theme is very fitting for the current position of young farmers in Ireland. We look forward to delving into the theme. It’s a very exciting time for young farmers in light of the fact that we now have clarity about a new agricultural policy and in light of the impending abolition of milk quotas which will pave the way for young farmers. The CAP is about continuing intensive, sustainable agriculture and the provision of food. It makes a vital contribution to the public good and the CAP supports are crucial.”

Farming is a challenging career and young farmers need the technical and business expertise to succeed. Conference delegates will visit a number of ambitious young farmers to see the success they have achieved.

Paul Nolan of Dawn Meats in thanking Macra for the opportunity to be involved in its conference again this year complimented the organisation on its theme selection for this event.

Nolan went on to say that such initiatives such as Dawn’s L2D with Macra are all about helping today’s young farmers in a demanding business where the combination of knowledge and CAP support are key.

Dr Ailish Byrne, senior agricultural manager with Ulster Bank said: “It is a great pleasure to support the Macra na Feirme Annual conference, which will explore the opportunities for young farmers within the new CAP programme.  I am looking forward to informed discussions and a lively debate on how best to exploit these opportunities while also addressing the challenges it may present. ”

The conference, which takes place over the course of the October Bank Holiday weekend, will also ensure an entertaining weekend for all delegates with a variety of activity promised including bands, DJs, and local diversions.
