Bulls sold for €1,900-10,800 at the Irish Limousin Cattle Society’s first sale of 2017, which was held in Roscrea Mart on Monday.
The sale met with a clearance rate of 76% and bulls averaged €3,750 each.
George Candler held the gabble on the day, with Denis Barrett taking the role of the second auctioneer.
Topping the sale at €10,800 was the ‘outstanding’ Wilodge Tonka son “Brookmill Klunk”, offered for sale by John and William Smith, Oldcastle, Co. Meath.
Prior to sale the bull was awarded first prize in his class, adding to the red ribbon he won at the National Limousin Show at the ILC Congress in Co. Kilkenny last August.
With five star ratings in multiple traits, Gerard and Martin Davis, Ballinalee, Co. Longford were the successful purchasers of this 17-month-old bull.
He is a son of Dovea AI’s ULM and the homebred Requin daughter Portauns Edel. The bull came into the ring with a terminal index value of €142 and a replacement index value of €79.
“Bos Luke”, an Ampertaine Commander son bred by Joe Collins, Carrick on Shannon, made €6,200. The bull has a replacement index value of €142 and a terminal index value of €175.
The bull’s dam, Logrea Henrietta Et, is a full sister to the highly-rated Newtown Freeman and now herd sire to the noted Elderberry herd.
Junior Champion rosette
Claiming the Junior Champion rosette was “Cappaduff Lorenzo” – a Loosebeare Fantastic son from Joe and Jennifer Moran, Claremorris, Co. Mayo.
Having previously claimed the North West Calf Champion 2016 title and the Overall Reserve Junior Male Champion award at the International Limousin Congress, the bull sold to Hefin Jones for €6,000.
The bull had five star ratings for the terminal Index, replacement Index, docility, carcass weight, carcass conformation and daughter milk.
His dam Newtown Ger Et has Wilodge Cerberus and Dauphin in her sire stack. He placed second-in-class in the pre-sale show and was acquired by K Stewart & Sons of the Greenhaugh herd based in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
The 17-month-old “Shannon Keltic” bred by Sarah, McElligott, Asdee, Listowel, Co. Kerry had a terminal index value of €169 and a replacement index value of €144 and sold for €5,400.
Richard O’Beirne, Tuam, Co. Galway parted with “Millburn Knowledge” for €5,100. The bull is a son of Fieldson Alfy and the Mas Du Clo daughter Millburn Vera.
Placed second in his class, “Millburn Knowledge” has a Terminal Index value of €141 coupled with a Replacement index of €74.
Dan Tynan, Monthrath, Co. Laois bred the Junior Reserve champion “Elite Keeley Et”.
Keeley is a November 2015 born son of Brutus Hashtag First and the “highly-regarded” donor dam Elite Forever 1 Et, his grand dam Ardlea Coillte is the top producer in the Ardlea Elite herd.
He was one of a number of bulls acquired for overseas customers by Owain Llyr. The gavel fell at €5,000 for this “eye-catching” bull.
The Irish Limousin Cattle Society will hold its next sale on March 18 in Tullamore.
