The weather will remain largely unsettled for this coming week, with frequent spells of rain and breezy conditions.

Today (Monday, February 1) will be a generally cloudy day with patchy rain or drizzle and some wintry falls over Ulster. Heavy rain will extend from the Atlantic into the southwest later in the day.

Highest afternoon temperatures will be 7° to 10° generally, remaining cooler over Ulster with highs of just 2° to 5°. There will be light to moderate southeast breezes, fresh on northern coasts.

Heavy rain will continue to move northeastwards across the country tonight, turning wintry in the north. Fresh southeasterly winds will veer southwesterly as the rain clears to frequent blustery showers from the southwest.

Lowest temperatures tonight will be 5° to 8° generally but colder in Ulster with lows of 2° to 5°.

It will be wet and breezy tomorrow (Tuesday, February 2), with frequent showers, merging into longer spells of rain at times. Some of the showers may be thundery – with hail – and wintry falls are possible in north Ulster during the morning.

Highest temperatures should be 8° to 11° generally, but 5° to 7° in Ulster, with fresh southwesterly winds, strong to near gale and gusty on southern coasts.

Outbreaks of rain will continue on Tuesday night, mainly over the west and north with showers and clear spells elsewhere. It will be windy, especially near western and southern coasts, with strong and gusty southwest winds, easing towards morning. Lowest temperatures are expected to be 4° to 7°.

Outbreaks of rain will continue to affect northern and western parts on Wednesday (February 3). It will be drier further south and east earlier in the day, with some sunshine, but rain will become widespread later. Highest temperatures will be 6° to 9° in moderate to fresh mainly south to southwest winds.

Rain or showers will continue on Wednesday night, mainly in the northern half of the country with clear spells developing further south. Lowest temperatures should be 4° to 7°, in the light to moderate southerly breezes.

There is expected to be a mix of bright or sunny spells and showers on Thursday (February 4). The showers will be mainly in the west at first, but they will spread elsewhere during the afternoon, with a risk of hail. Highest temperatures will be 6° to 10°, coldest in Ulster in light to moderate southerly breezes.

Showers will continue on Thursday night. Lowest temperatures are expected to be 2° to 4° in light or moderate southwest breezes.
