Over 60,000 people flocked to the Tullamore Show yesterday to marvel at some of the best livestock the country has to offer.

Home to the AIB National Livestock Show, this year’s event also featured national finals for the Charolais, Hereford, Limousin and Simmental breed societies.

And, as a result, just over €37,000 in prize money was doled out to these breeders in Blueball, Tullamore, Co. Offaly.

Limousins return to Tullamore

After last year’s absence, the Irish Limousin Cattle Society returned to host its national finals in Tullamore. Tasked with judging on the day was Kiree Kermode from the Isle of Man.

Kermode had to pass judgement on over 100 cattle that were represented across 24 different classes on the day. A prize fund valued at approximately €8,000 was available.

James O’Grady’s Meenross Leader was crowned the AIB National Livestock Show Limousin Male Champion. The son of Ampertaine Elgin pipped John McInerney’s Drummin Lente ET to the title.

Moving on to the AIB National Livestock Show Limousin Female Championship; first prize in this section went to Owen Hester’s Meelickaduff Honda ET. The daughter of Wilodge Vantastic was tapped forward in front of Timothy Corridan’s Roundhill Langel 1700 ET.

Meelickaduff Honda ET also went on to claim the AIB National Livestock Show Limousin Champion title for the Hester family from Meelickaduff, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. The reserve overall Limousin title was awarded to James O’Grady’s Meenross Leader.

Charolais cattle galore

The Irish Charolais Cattle Society held its national show in Blueball, Tullamore, Co. Offaly for the first time and it featured an entry of more than 180 cattle.

Breeders and exhibitors presented their cattle for judges Roy Milne, who judged the male classes, and Tracey Nicolls who was tasked with the female classes. Making the competition even more interesting was the prize fund of nearly €13,500 on offer.

Brendan Canning, from Creggconnell, Rosses Point, Co. Sligo, claimed the AIB National Livestock Show Charolais Champion title with Sagesse Martha ET. The September-2016 born daughter of Adonis pipped Martin Ryan’s Goldstar Marlboro ET to the title.

Ryan had claimed the championship for the past two years with his prized cow Goldstar Elle.

170 Herefords on show

This year’s Hereford national final featured an entry of more than 170 animals, entered across 18 different classes. Judge Donal Robbie was tasked with identifying the winners and runners up of this year’s competition, which entailed a prize fund of over €8,000.

John Appelbe, from Carrigroe, Clonakilty, Co. Cork, took the AIB National Livestock Show Hereford Male Championship with Solpoll 1 Lawman. The UK-bred bull is a son of Pamure 1 Henry and topped the male section ahead of Sean McKiernan’s Shiloh Farm Dynamite.

Solpoll 1 Lawman was also crowned the AIB National Livestock Show Hereford Champion, beating Gerry McNamara’s Cabasheeda to the title.

24th Tullamore Show for Simmental breeders

The Irish Simmental Cattle Society hosted its 24th national final at the Tullamore Show on Sunday. Under the watchful eye of judge Neil Mcilwaine, from Co. Tyrone, over 150 cattle were exhibited.

Garrett Behan’s Clonagh Darling Eyes ET was crowned the Simmental Female Champion, ahead of Kieran and Paul Mullarkeys’ Tanley Gretta. Clonagh Darling Eyes ET was also awarded the AIB National Livestock Show Simmental Championship on the day.

The Simmental Male Champion title was awarded to Raceview Herman owned by Peter and Marion O’Connell from Raceview, Knoppague, Mallow, Co. Cork.

The September-2016 born son of YFK pipped Lissadell Jackpot to the title and later went on to take the reserve title in the AIB National Livestock Show Simmental Championship.

Other titles

Along with the breeds mentioned above, a number of other breed societies held shows at yesterday’s Tullamore show.

Commercial cattle

Alongside the pedigree cattle, there was also a large showing of commercial stock. This year’s event featured an entry of over 330 cattle.

Some 28 classes of commercial cattle were on show and a total prize fund of over €20,000 was dished out to the champions of the commercial classes.

Best bullock with two or more permanent teeth:

Best Charolais cross heifer or bullock with no more than two permanent teeth:

Moyvalley Meats €2,000 commercial factory bullock:

Dawn Meats €2,000 factory heifer championship:
