A man in his 80s has died in mid-Ulster after the tractor and trailer he was driving collided with a Honda 4×4, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has confirmed.

The accident happened approximately 2.5km outside Moneymore, Co. Derry on a stretch of road on the Moneymore to Cookstown (Co. Tyrone) dual carriageway.

The PSNI said the male driver of the Honda was taken to hospital for treatment for injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

A PSNI spokeswoman said that the road traffic collision happened around 9.30am, this morning (July 17).

Inspector Keith Hicks is appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact local Police in Cookstown or the Collision Investigation Unit in Steeple Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident with a fire brigade from Cookstown and on from Magherafelt deployed to the scene.

The Mid Ulster Vintage Vehicles Club annual charity tractor rally from Moneymore to Ballyclare started today July 17 in aid of the Northern Ireland Hospice.

It is reported that the deceased tractor driver is a member of the vintage club.

PSNI Cookstown said that the dual carriageway between Cookstown and Moneymore following the road traffic collision remains closed and that diversions are in place.
