Only a few days since Storm Ellen hit the country, and Status Yellow wind and rain warnings are now in place.

A Status Yellow rainfall warning is in place for the country from 9:00pm tonight (Monday, August 24) until 9:00pm tomorrow (Tuesday, August 25) with intense rainfall expected. According to Met Éireann, rainfall of 30mm to 50mm are expected with surface flooding.

A Status Yellow wind warning for Munster, Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford is in place from 6:00am tomorrow (Tuesday, August 25) until 7:00pm the same day. According to Met Éireann, it will become very windy as strong south-west winds veer westerly, with widespread mean speeds between 50 and 65km/h and gusts between 90 and 110km/h, higher in coastal areas.

This rainfall will elevate river levels and may result in river flooding also.

However, much of today will be dry with some sunny spells and some scattered showers expected. Highest temperatures will range from 16° to 19°. As the day progresses, light southerly breezes will freshen later and it will turn wet across Munster during the evening.

Tonight will be very wet and windy with heavy persistent falls of rain. Winds will increase fresh to strong and gusty, possibly reaching gale force along parts of the south and south-west later. Lowest temperatures will range from 10° to 14°.

Tomorrow will be very wet and windy with “torrential downpours and the continued risk of flooding” according to Met Éireann. It will be windiest across Munster, much of Leinster along with west and north-west coasts. There will be some mild sunny spells too; with highest temperatures of 16° to 20°.

On Wednesday (August 26) most areas will be dry with sunny spells and well-scattered showers – most of these across the west and south-west.

Thursday (August 27) will see the weather becoming unsettled again, with showers merging into some longer spells of rain and the risk of isolated thunderstorms. It will be cooler on Friday, as northerly breezes set in, with afternoon highs of 14° to 18°.

The weekend is expected to be drier and calmer with sunny spells and scattered showers.
