A number of rainfall warnings remain in place along parts of the west coast today, according to Met Eireann.

A status yellow rainfall warning remains in place in counties Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo up until 3:00pm today (Friday, August 25); this warning was issued at 3:00pm yesterday.

Rainfall accumulations of 25mm are expected generally, but there is the potential for close to 35mm on higher ground.

Meanwhile, a similar warning is in place for Co. Donegal up until 6:00pm this evening. Further spells of heavy rain could lead to between 25mm and 40mm of rain falling in the northwest of the country.

The county has been badly affected by heavy rainfall and flooding since Tuesday night, August 22. In excess of 70mm of rain reportedly fell in parts of the county during the night, causing widespread flooding.

Numerous roads have been damaged and many farmers have lost animals or fodder as a result of the floods. The President of the Irish Farmers’ Association, Joe Healy, is expected to visit the flood stricken county today.

As well as these rainfall warnings, a status yellow warning for potato blight also remains in place across the country today.

Weather conditions conductive to the spread of potato blight are expected to continue in coastal parts of the northwest and north on Friday; this warning was issue yesterday at 9:00pm.

According to Met Eireann, some limited opportunities for spraying are expected during the next seven days. Drying conditions over the same period will be mixed, with the best opportunities arising in southern and eastern areas.

Forecast

The rest of today is set to be affected by heavy showers or longer spells of rain over parts of Ulster, Connacht and north Leinster. There will also be risk of an isolated thunderstorm in Ulster this afternoon.

Lengthy dry periods are forecast elsewhere, with some sunny spells and just a few passing showers likely to develop. Temperatures are expected to range from 16º to 19º, in moderate south to southwest breezes.

Conditions will become dry in many places tonight, but a few showers will persist in Ulster, Met Eireann added.

Clear periods are forecast, especially in midland and southern areas – localised pockets of mist and fog are also set to form. Temperatures are likely to drop to around 10º overnight with light, variable breezes.
