2018 has been one of the toughest years on record for Irish livestock farmers and we are heading into winter unsure if we will have enough fodder to feed our stock through the housed period into 2019.

There will be a lot of different feeds entering farmyards in the coming weeks and months, but one thing is for sure; we will be forced to feed higher levels of concentrates this winter.

Keeping the diet consistent will be difficult and changes will cause stress, digestive problems and poor feed efficiency. One way to prevent this is to use the rumen specific live yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077 (Levucell SC) from Lallemand Animal Nutrition.

Levucell SC – How does it work?

Levucell SC has been selected from over 1,000 yeast strains for its activity in the rumen and benefits today from a robust scientific documentation regarding its effects and modes of action (Figure 1 pictured below).

In short, Levucell SC helps create an environment in the rumen that is unfavourable to undesirable bacteria development while, at the same time, promoting the bacteria and fungi responsible for digesting the diet.

This has significant secondary effects in terms of animal performance and well-being and the return you get from your feed investment.

Higher concentrate feeding will be the norm this winter, especially in finishing beef – but also in some milking herds. Higher dietary starch and sugar levels will increase the time the rumen spends at low pH (SARA). By stimulating the lactic acid utilising bacteria, Levucell SC raises and stabilises rumen pH.

As seen in Figure 2 (pictured below), Levucell SC fed animals adapt to their high-concentrate diet much better than control animals, maintaining a significantly higher rumen pH in days 1-10 and then again as concentrate levels increase beyond 8kg/head/day.

Surviving the pelleting process with TITAN technology

All Levucell SC supplied to Irish feed mills comes with a patented micro-encapsulation technology called TITAN. Thanks to TITAN’s unique fat coating, live yeast strain (Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077) is better protected from humidity and steam during the meal conditioning and pelleting process.

TITAN is the most adapted technology available to protect yeast viability. Is the yeast in your nut TITAN protected?
