Calving, on most farms, is less than eight weeks away and now is an opportune time to ensure that you are prepared for next spring.

With more and more farmers aiming to calve 90% of their cows in just six weeks, it’s set to be a very busy period for a lot of farmers.

Once the first cow calves, farmers – no matter how well they are organised – will find that they don’t have time to attend beneficial meetings on calf health, husbandry and best practices.

Given this, Bonanza Calf Nutrition – Ireland’s leading calf nutrition company – is holding a series of meetings before and after Christmas.

A number of topics will be discussed at length, including the latest advice on disease control, housing, milk replacer and concentrate feeding.

Other areas that will be delved into are the best ways to reduce labour and improve calf performance this coming spring.

When and where?

The next meeting in the series will take place in Birr, Co. Offaly, on Tuesday (December 12) in the County Arms Hotel.

On Wednesday (December 13), another meeting will be held in the Talbot Hotel in Co. Carlow. In the new year, meetings are also scheduled to take place in the counties of Westmeath, Cavan and Galway.

Meeting information:
  • December 12: County Arms Hotel, Birr, Co. Offaly;
  • December 13: Talbot Hotel, Co. Carlow;
  • January 10: Mullingar Park Hotel, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath;
  • January 11: Hotel Kilmore, Dublin Road, Killygarry, Cavan;
  • January 17: Ard Ri Hotel, Tuam, Co. Galway.

All of the meetings will commence at 7:30pm and tea and refreshments will be served afterwards.

An excellent line-up of speakers

Farmers who attend the meetings will hear from a number of excellent speakers.

Dr. Christine Cummins and Dr. Amanda Dunn, both of whom carried out research on colostrum, vaccines and calf management in Moorepark and Hillsborough respectively, will provide farmers with advice.

They will be joined Joe Murphy and Tom Warren, who both have spent over 25 years advising farmers on calf rearing.

According to Cummins, the meetings are an opportunity to reflect on the issues faced with calf rearing last year and to plan for the coming season.

She continued: “Calf rearing coincides with the busiest time on farm and after milking, it’s the most labour-intensive job on the farm.”
