The Teagasc National Dairy Conference heads for Limerick on November 27. The theme for this year is ‘Robust Dairy Farming for Future Challenges’.

After a tough year on farm due to weather, grass growth and cash flow, some welcome optimism has returned with improved dairy market conditions. However, long-term challenges for the sector need to be addressed.

The conference will take a forward look at key issues, including how to boost pasture productivity, dealing with herd management in difficult spring conditions, a deep dive on protected urea, and dairy farmers’ role in protecting water quality.

Attendees will hear from a mix of researchers, advisors and leading farmers in these morning plenary sessions. The content will focus on real-world issues and solutions for dairy farmers.

The afternoon will run in practical workshop format, where attendees can choose topics of most interest to them. The workshops have an informal style to allow for plenty of questions, debate and discussion.

This has proven very popular in recent years. Topics such as managing cash costs, herd health and nutrition, and a review of clover experience on commercial farms will feature.

New science is always of interest but nothing beats hearing the experience of farmers who have putting new ideas and technologies into practice.

Teagasc is delighted to have Limerick farmers John Macnamara, Michael Carroll, Robert and Denis O’Dea, and Cork farmers Jerome and Brian Desmond presenting at the conference. Their input and insight will be a highlight of the day.
