Gardai are investigating a farm death that occurred in Co. Clare yesterday (October 22) evening in which a man was killed.

The incident happened around 7pm last night in Shragh, Kilrush, Co. Clare.

The body of a man was discovered on farmland near his house and a Garda spokesperson said that the man was aged in his early 50s.

The spokesperson said that the body was removed to Limerick county morgue and that the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) are investigating.

By the nature of the injuries the man sustained, it would appear to be an accident involving machinery.

Gardai and the Health and Safety Authority are investigating.

This latest farm death brings to 16 the number of people killed in farming-related accidents in 2015.

On October 4 October, a 19-year-old, died from serious head injuries sustained whilst opening a trailer door in Co. Offaly.

On September 30, a 69-year-old died after he fell off roof on the farm in Co. Cavan.

According to the HSA, age and location are key factors in farm deaths in Ireland.

It says that deaths in agriculture, unlike many other sectors, generally involve family members including children and elderly persons.

Age is a major contributing factor in farm incidents in Ireland (both fatal and non-fatal) with the average age of an Irish farmer now standing at 57 years and increasing, it said.
