One man has died after he and two county council co-workers were struck by an articulated lorry while hedge cutting in Co. Sligo.

The other two men were taken to Sligo General Hospital and it is believed that they are in critical condition a Health and Safety Authority (HSA) spokesperson said.

The accident happened around one o’clock today (Thursday August 13) on the N4 between Boyle and Sligo.

The 62-year-old man Pauric Noone and his colleagues were struck by an articulated truck on the N4 Sligo to Dublin road at 11.40am on Thursday. He is the father of two.

The three men were part of a county council team who were carrying out verge maintenance work on the Ballinafad Castlebaldwin stretch of the road when the accident occurred.

HSA inspectors are at the scene and the road is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day.
